Crowns and Coronations

Canterbury is a city of national and international importance.

As well as being the home of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, the senior bishop of the Church of England.
It is the Archbishop of Canterbury who has placed the crown on the head of the reigning King or Queen at almost all coronations over the past 1000 years!
Canterbury has a long and fascinating history, closely linked to the story of the English Crown.
It has a strong heritage of crafts, including work in metal, stone, stained glass, wood, cloth and leather.
In medieval times, many of these craftspeople were members of groups called guilds.
Since 1448, the most important office-holder in the City of Canterbury has been the Mayor (now the Lord Mayor).
